- Metal type: Mild steel is cheapest ($110/hr). Stainless requires TIG welding expertise and specialist consumables ($150/hr). Aluminium is highest ($180/hr). A 2-hour aluminium job costs nearly twice the labour of a 2-hour steel job.
- Access difficulty: Working at height, in confined spaces, or in tight access adds time. Good access — well-lit, clear work zone, power nearby — keeps the job shorter.
- Number of welders: Some structural or commercial jobs require two qualified welders. Each welder is billed separately.
- Post-weld work: Grinding, finishing, painting, and cold galvanising are separate line items if required.

You can legitimately reduce the total invoice by:
- Booking during business hours (saves 50–100% on surcharges)
- Having clear, lit access to the work area — a welder who can park next to the job and work efficiently takes less time
- Knowing your metal type before the call — it helps get a more accurate quote and avoid a site charge for discovery
- Pre-cutting materials to length if you're supplying them — reduces on-site time
- Grouping small repairs into a single visit rather than booking separately
What you should not do to save money: negotiate away insurance coverage or qualifications. A $50 saving on a call-out fee is not worth it if the weld fails or an accident causes a claim.
