What Counts as a Welding Emergency?
Not every urgent job is an emergency — and the word is worth using accurately because emergency rates are higher. These are the jobs that genuinely qualify:
- Safety-critical failures. A collapsed handrail or balustrade where people are at risk of falling. A pool fence with a section down where children or pets can access the pool. A security barrier failure on a commercial site. These are life-safety issues.
- Security breaches. A broken driveway gate or perimeter fence on a commercial, industrial, or residential property that leaves the site unsecured overnight. This can't wait until Monday.
- Construction programme emergencies. A failed structural connection or damaged steel member that's holding up a construction programme. An idle crew costs more per hour than the emergency welding callout.
- Equipment breakdown causing operational downtime. A cracked machinery frame, a broken loading arm, or a structural failure in industrial plant where the cost of downtime is significant.
What does not qualify as an emergency:
- Aesthetic repairs — rust, scratches, surface damage that doesn't affect function or safety
- Planned maintenance that was forgotten until the last minute
- "I want it done today" when there's no safety or operational reason
If you're unsure, call and describe the situation. If it sounds urgent, we'll treat it as urgent.
Response Window — What to Realistically Expect
Mobile welding response time depends on current booking load, location, and time of day:
- Same-day response (within 4–6 hours): Available for most of Sydney metro for jobs called before 1pm on weekdays. Subject to current availability — call to confirm.
- Next-morning response: Most common for jobs that come in after 3pm on weekdays or on Friday afternoons. We book in, arrive first thing the following business day.
- After-hours (evenings and weekends): Available for genuine safety emergencies. After-hours surcharges apply (see below). Not available for routine work at a premium rate — genuinely for safety and security situations.
Be direct about the urgency and the reason when you call. "I have a school inspection tomorrow and my pool fence came down" gets prioritised differently to "I've been meaning to fix this for a while." Both are real jobs — one actually needs same-day.
Emergency Welding Costs
The standard call-out fee ($350 + GST for the first hour of steel welding) applies as the base. Emergency and after-hours work carries additional charges:
- After 5pm weekdays: +50% on call-out and hourly rate
- Saturday: +75%
- Sunday and public holidays: +100%
- Emergency callout with less than 2 hours notice during business hours: +$100 flat mobilisation premium
For a same-day job booked in the morning and attended in the afternoon during business hours, standard rates apply — no surcharge. Emergency surcharges only apply when the response is outside standard hours or on extremely short notice.

What to Do Before the Welder Arrives
A few things that make the job faster and safer when we get there:
- Secure the area. If a balustrade or handrail is down, barricade the hazard. Tape, cones, or a piece of ply screwed across the gap — anything to prevent access until the weld is done.
- Clear the work zone. Aim for 1.5–2 metres of clear space around the weld location. Remove furniture, potted plants, vehicles, anything that limits access or creates a fire hazard.
- Ensure power access. Check there's a standard 15A or 10A power outlet within 20m of the job. If the work is remote (rear of property, paddock, loading dock), mention this when you call — we may bring a generator.
- Take photos. Send us photos of the damage before we arrive if possible. This helps us arrive with the right consumables and materials.
- Know the metal type if possible. Steel, galvanised steel, stainless, or aluminium. If you don't know, we'll identify it on arrival — but knowing saves time.
What We Can Fix on Emergency Callout
Emergency mobile welding is best suited to:
- Gate repairs — broken hinges, cracked frames, sagging driveway gates
- Handrail and balustrade re-welding — separated posts, cracked base plates, failed connections
- Fence panel repairs and security restorations
- Structural tacks and temporary fixes on construction sites
- Equipment and machinery frame repairs
- Pool fence restoration for compliance
What's harder to do on emergency callout (without prior planning):
- Jobs requiring fabricated replacement components from scratch — we can do basic section cuts and fabrication but complex custom pieces are better planned in advance
- Work requiring long cooling periods, primer cure time, or post-weld finishing that can't be rushed
- Jobs in genuinely confined or hazardous spaces requiring a permit-to-work or hot-work permit from your organisation
